Profile

My main research has been on milking methods and milking machines and how they influence udder health, teat condition, milkability, milk yield and milk quality. We have focused on the first line of defence, how the liner treats the teat canal, and how the quarters respond to infections. It is yet not fully understood how bacteria pass the teat canal and this area needs more attention. This becomes especially important when one milking unit milks many cows as in automatic milking systems. We have focus on how these machines affect the hygienic quality of milk, teat condition, and udder health. Experiments are carried out either in our own research facilities or by contracting farmers.

Research objectives

  • To reduce the frequency of clinical and subclinical mastitis among dairy cows, secondarily to improve the rationality of machine milking.
  • To improve milk quality and udder health of cows milked automatically.
