I have lead and participated in numerous national and international research projects.

I have organized and chaired or co-chaired two highly visited international workshops: September 1994: Time-Domain Reflectometry. Applications in Soil Science, at Research Centre Foulum. September 2002: Colloids and Colloid-Facilitated Transport of Contaminants in Soils and Sediments at Research Centre Foulum.

I have organized a highly-cited special section on colloids and colloid-facilitated transport in the Vadose Zone Journal (2004). I serve as per review referee for numerous international journals.

Supervised or co-supervised 3 B.Sc and 12 M.Sc. students for their final thesis work. Supervised or co-supervised 5 Ph.D. students for their dissertation work.

Project leadership and participation

National

I am project leader and Primary Investigator (PI) of a major research project funded by the Danish Research Council for Technology and Production Sciences: Soil Infrastructure, Interfaces & Translocation Processes in Inner Space (Soil-it-is) 2007-2012

I was project leader and PI of a research project under the Danish Research Councils FREJA-program Colloid-facilitated Transport of Contaminants in Undisturbed Soil Systems (1999-2004)

I am work package leader and co-PI on project on geology-dependent variation in transport processes with respect to risk assessment of phosphorus loss (GEORAP) under the research programme: Animal Husbandry, the Neighbours and the Environment funded by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries (2005-2009)

I was co-leader and co-PI on project concerning finger flow in the root zone of sandy soils. Funded by the Danish Research Council (1995-1998).

I was work package leader and co-PI on project concerning transport of pesticides, carried by colloidal soil particles, by leaching through macropores. Funded by the Danish Inter-ministry Research Programme on Pesticides (1995-1998).

I was work package leader and co-PI on project concerning irrigation from a holistic resource perspective. Processes included fingered flow, hysteresis, and soil water repellency. Funded by the Danish Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries (2003-2006).

I was work package leader and co-PI on project concerning sustainable land use, focusing on transport of xenobiotics in sewage sludge. Funded by the Strategic Environmental Research Programme (1997-2000).

I was co-PI on project concerning pesticides and groundwater. Funded by the Danish Environmental Research Programme (1996-1999).

I was co-PI on project concerning “Developing Efficient Soil Sampling Methods in the Unsaturated Zone”. Funded by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (1999).

International

I was institutional coordinator, work package leader, and co-PI on EU project (Liberation): Development of a decision support system for sustainable management of contaminated land by linking bioavailability, ecological risk and ground water pollution of organic pollutants. (2002-2006).

I was co-PI of a Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology international joint research project “Methods to Measure and Predict Fate of Environmental Impact Chemicals in Soils”, together with researcher from Japan and the US (1995-1997, 1998-2000, 2001-2002, 2004-2005).

I participated in projects on volatile organic chemicals under the Ecotoxicology Program of the University of California Toxic Substances Research and Teaching Program and the Center for Ecological Health research at U.C. Davis (1991-1992).
