New flexible housing unit for pigs is taking shape

Published: Tuesday 12 December 2006

The construction workers are busy hoisting the rafters for the new animal unit that will be ready for use around 1 March 2007. The construction work is part of Stage II of the renovation of the livestock buildings, which also includes renovation of the fixtures and fittings in the other livestock buildings for pigs, cattle, mink and poultry, and in the research slaughterhouse. Next to the horse stable at Research Centre Foulum the ground has been prepared for the casting of foundations for an infection stable. The new flexible livestock building will offer the maximum degree of flexibility, which involves being able to change flooring and pen size. It can be described as a large sand pit that can be modelled according to the needs of the individual research projects, says Gunnar Hald Mikkelsen, Head of the Farm Management and Animal Research Facilities.
