New publication: Anaerobic digestions of by-products from production of ethanol

Published: Thursday 21 February 2008

Scientists from the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the University of Aarhus have investigated the possibilities of anaerobic digestion of by-products from ethanol processing industries. Anaerobic digestion of such products can be used in the production of biogas.

The results of the investigation have been published in an internal report.

The studies were carried out in a batch digestion process and a continuous process – the latter at a mesophilic temperature (39oC) and an average retention time of 32 days. The batch digestion showed that the by-products are very easy degradable and produce a high methane yield. The continuous digestion took place over a period of five months and gave a lower average methane yield. This was apparently because the digestive process was inhibited mainly by ammonia.
