Profile

My main research area is phosphorus (P) metabolism in cattle with focus on P utilisation and P availability in feeds for cattle. But my research also covers other aspects of animal nutrition with emphasis on minerals, e.g. the effect of zinc in piglet and calf nutrition and physiology. I am working with intensive animal models and production trials, as well as chemical analysis and in vitro methods. My main research projects in relation to P are ‘Sustainable handling and utilisation of animal manure’, ‘Improvement of phosphorus utilisation in animal husbandry’, ‘Availability of phosphorus in feed for cattle’ and ‘Phosphorus in feed’. The main issues of these projects are to describe and improve the availability of P in feeds and utilisation of P in the animals. I am also involved in a project concerning new feeding strategies for young calves and impact on ruminal development and immune function, and the project ‘Organic dairy production systems’ with focus on increasing the use of home-grown roughage. Furthermore, I am currently working on new P feeding recommendations in cooperation with the dairy industry, and I am teaching at the university as well as at courses.
